As I sit here in my common state of insomnia, watching ’50 First Dates’ for the 10th time on HBO OnDemand, I thought I should update and educate a few people after some questions were raised this past weekend.
First, off-topic, yes, I can’t get enough ’50 First Dates’, Sandler’s at his best in what doesn’t feel quite as contrived as ‘Big Daddy’…very reminiscent of ‘Wedding Singer’, no doubt due to Drew’s presence as well….
2nd, keyboards in a song do not doom it; a weak song to me has no chance once the boards kick in. However, a good song can get better with a little artificial ivory…take these examples:
- almost any Bon Jovi song
- ditto Cinderella
- those Revenge of the Nerds songs
- ‘School of Rock’ by the School of Rock
OK, back to my original point, to talk about the weekend. Not much happening until last nite, when we decided to hook up with some friends we hadn’t done so in quite awhile. Think it’d been almost a year since I last saw vinylgod et al. There’s nothing like sittin’ out back of their house, grillin’ and spinning some tunes, even tho we’ve only done it a couple of times; and we’ve been pretty damn lame for awhile now.
VG got his name for his huge vinyl collection in the basement, all the classics are there, some seriously rare albums IMHO. He’d just picked up Motley Crue’s ‘Shout at the Devil’, in fact…but I mentioned to him I needed a Whitesnake vinyl fix, so we went over and chilled with some beer; last nite was muggy as hell, temps in the 90s and humid, so a little Summit Hefeweizen was my vice….then we trekked down to Saint Anthony Main to check out some live music and continue drinking, of course. Ended up checking Nye’s for the first time in my Minnesota career, and then finished up at Jitter’s.
Anyway, The Wife got rather tipsy, she had a couple of drinks bought for her that she was then obligated to finish off. She’s by no means a drunk, everyone has their times (mine are recorded by the scars on my chin, ‘nother story, ‘nother time)…but I bring it up because when she gets to the point where I know it’s almost time to go, her voice changes. I don’t know if you know people like this, not just the voice getting louder, but it actually changes to that of another person; hers kicks in and she starts talking like Judy Tenuta, both the sound and her words…it’s just hilarious!
But for some reason, when I pointed it out last nite, her and I were the only ones in the group who knew who she was..what???!!! I could understand if we were out with her sisters, who are much younger, but come on, the Love Goddess? Judy was an icon of the MTV generation…
Hmm, what else…oh, while I’m giving props to the vinyl one, a couple other things. Mainly that he’s introduced me to the world of organized wiffle ball. Turns out he’s gonna try to set me up for next year, or subbing at the big Labor Day event they have. You can check out KARE11’s story on their AllStar/FunStar event from this past week; if you look close at their video you’ll get a peek of vinylgod himself.
Also, SOAD tix go on sale Saturday…have a feeling I’ll be calling up his holiness on this one; their new album kicks so much serious ass, I can’t wait to get to work to blow out a Monday morning…
So, there you go, it’s 1:00 in the morning, so I leave you this lame post, whaddya want?
