Wifflin’ for Wishes 2005

Posted a link to the Wifflin’ for Wishes tournament coming up on Labor Day weekend (see Links link above, or see sidebar)…hopefully they don’t mind a hotlink for now, I don’t get that much traffic anyway…but it looks like I’ll be there!

Wie Watch: she won twice today, 3 matches away from the Masters…

I have no use for a Tiger Watch (although he surprisingly is leading the British Open after the 1st round), he’s overrated anymore; actually I should say just a normal player, no need for a Watch…

Quick followup on Wie

Holy crap, I almost forgot the other funny twist to the Wie saga…according to an article on Yahoo! Sports, talking about Wie’s next opponent, Mr. Hockersmith:

Hockersmith, whose eyes remain open when he sleeps, said …

His eyes stay open while he sleeps?!? I’ve never heard of that before, in humans that is…

Going to do some research, this is fascinating…no Mesmerizing (heh, heh, see sidebar)

UPDATE: and as promised, more on the ‘sleeping with eyes open’ here

Random Thoughts

Dang ol’ client work has me tied up pretty well this week, so sorry for lack of updates….hmmm, lemme see, besides fighting a ‘gag order’ on reporting on a new web technology, here’s what I’ve noticed online this week so far:

In the ‘what are athletes thinking?’ department, and I use the term athlete loosely here, upon Michelle Wie qualifying for match play at a men’s APL tournament, listen to Mr. 2nd Place Overall:

I don’t think she should be here…I think she should play in the women’s tournaments because they don’t let the men play in women’s tournaments. I just don’t agree with that, but it’s not my call…

Seriously, sir (another term I use loosely), that’s like saying you should be able to bring ‘Suck My Wake’ to a regatta! For crying out loud, what a double-standard, how do you live, sir? You could be wiping up the LPGA right now, if they’d just let you playyyyy….anyway, I was glad to see Michelle won her first match and moves on.

Anyone see Will Farrell’s last appearance on SNL, as host? Back when he was promoting ‘Bewitched’, QOTSA were musical guests…I laughed my ass off today when ‘Little Sister’ by QOTSA came on Yahoo! ME today….total flashback….

Enter cowbell…

out…

Godess of Love

As I sit here in my common state of insomnia, watching ’50 First Dates’ for the 10th time on HBO OnDemand, I thought I should update and educate a few people after some questions were raised this past weekend.

First, off-topic, yes, I can’t get enough ’50 First Dates’, Sandler’s at his best in what doesn’t feel quite as contrived as ‘Big Daddy’…very reminiscent of ‘Wedding Singer’, no doubt due to Drew’s presence as well….

2nd, keyboards in a song do not doom it; a weak song to me has no chance once the boards kick in. However, a good song can get better with a little artificial ivory…take these examples:

  • almost any Bon Jovi song
  • ditto Cinderella
  • those Revenge of the Nerds songs
  • ‘School of Rock’ by the School of Rock

OK, back to my original point, to talk about the weekend. Not much happening until last nite, when we decided to hook up with some friends we hadn’t done so in quite awhile. Think it’d been almost a year since I last saw vinylgod et al. There’s nothing like sittin’ out back of their house, grillin’ and spinning some tunes, even tho we’ve only done it a couple of times; and we’ve been pretty damn lame for awhile now.

VG got his name for his huge vinyl collection in the basement, all the classics are there, some seriously rare albums IMHO. He’d just picked up Motley Crue’s ‘Shout at the Devil’, in fact…but I mentioned to him I needed a Whitesnake vinyl fix, so we went over and chilled with some beer; last nite was muggy as hell, temps in the 90s and humid, so a little Summit Hefeweizen was my vice….then we trekked down to Saint Anthony Main to check out some live music and continue drinking, of course. Ended up checking Nye’s for the first time in my Minnesota career, and then finished up at Jitter’s.

Anyway, The Wife got rather tipsy, she had a couple of drinks bought for her that she was then obligated to finish off. She’s by no means a drunk, everyone has their times (mine are recorded by the scars on my chin, ‘nother story, ‘nother time)…but I bring it up because when she gets to the point where I know it’s almost time to go, her voice changes. I don’t know if you know people like this, not just the voice getting louder, but it actually changes to that of another person; hers kicks in and she starts talking like Judy Tenuta, both the sound and her words…it’s just hilarious!

But for some reason, when I pointed it out last nite, her and I were the only ones in the group who knew who she was..what???!!! I could understand if we were out with her sisters, who are much younger, but come on, the Love Goddess? Judy was an icon of the MTV generation…

Hmm, what else…oh, while I’m giving props to the vinyl one, a couple other things. Mainly that he’s introduced me to the world of organized wiffle ball. Turns out he’s gonna try to set me up for next year, or subbing at the big Labor Day event they have. You can check out KARE11’s story on their AllStar/FunStar event from this past week; if you look close at their video you’ll get a peek of vinylgod himself.

Also, SOAD tix go on sale Saturday…have a feeling I’ll be calling up his holiness on this one; their new album kicks so much serious ass, I can’t wait to get to work to blow out a Monday morning…

So, there you go, it’s 1:00 in the morning, so I leave you this lame post, whaddya want?

Notice what’s different?

Anyone notice what’s different today? Besides this post I’m adding right now? …. upper-right corner … yes, I changed the name of the site. It’s been illiniguy.com for awhile, but with a recent domain name I registered on a whim, and me getting ready to change focus here, I thought a name change was ripe for the taking. Plus maybe it’ll get people in here with a more open mind, not thinking it’s only an Illini blog; heck, I’ve only got, what, 3 or so posts on them? IlliniGuy will still be here, though, contrary to the site’s tagline…I’m not going anywhere, and I’m not changing my name on the site…although with the new name I did consider ‘H.I.M.’…which reminds me, time to swap out my music pick….gimme a couple secs, then check the sidebar again….

This site has been tech-heavy for awhile, just due to what I do day-to-day. But I’ll be changing that soon. I realized why I don’t post as much here as I thought I would, mainly because writing about tech day after day gets old, and it wasn’t my intent anyways. I wanted this to be more well-rounded, hence the addition of the music section, etc. But now things like that are first priority…I won’t get rid of the tech, I have alot to post there as well, just more music, sports, etc., things I lose touch with every once in awhile.

And as a free bonus to my lady readers……well, when they show up, I’ve added a link in the Blogroll (see Links in sidebar), I happened across this blog (PINK is the new BLOG) being referenced on another site, this girl said she was addicted to it. From what I can tell it’s some kid who is infatuated with all things Hollywood and lives for talking about celebrities, not to mention fashion and glamour…not my cup of tea, but at least interesting…I know the lady readers will love it, though, and that’s what I’m here for…

Opera adds BitTorrent client

Opera has released a tech preview of version 8.02 of its browser. As always, you can get it here.

Feature of note: they’ve added a BitTorrent client. Wow! Nice!

You are sick!

Absolutely gross…I was so sickened yesterday I’m surprised I didn’t stay in the bathroom for good! You know what’s coming, another ‘male hygiene’ story…so I was in the bathroom at work yesterday, a single staller, yet there standing-room-only spots. So someone comes walking in, of course I can’t see him really, not really trying to, but I notice he’s not wearing shoes.

Rule #1: unless in your bathroom at home, or maybe even then, wear shoes…flip-flops or something, they’re $1 for crying out loud! Socks are bacteria sponges…

So as he finishes up, he proceeds to head for the door. I cringe, thinking he’ll bypass the sink. But, no, he stops there, and starts fumbling with something, then backs up into the corner of the bathroom, where I realize he’s changing into his workout clothes. Good enough, normally you do this in the stall, but said person was occupado…he gets done, heads for the door again (I cringe again) and sure enough he walks out without washing.

Rule #2: wash your damn hands! The next pandemic will be unstoppable with people like this walking around, sharing facilities with us!

Needless to say I handled the doorknob with care on my way out!

PO Meter

See that ‘indicator’ in the sidebar? I added a PO Meter, where PO does not stand for Post Office. It’s so you can tell what my mood is on any given day. It’s really simple, the top bar is the current status. Meaning today, I am furious…

Actually, it’s been most of this week now…don’t ask why unless you want a hand bitten off. Usually I’m only at this level if someone or something has ‘betrayed’ me, the only thing that really chaps my hide to that level…

Stay tuned to see if it ever goes down…I wouldn’t bank on it anytime soon (oh, so not until fall)….

BTW, props to my former co-workers at a client of mine, we started doing this as the company we were working at was just painful! This way we could watch it like a heartbeat, we had an EKG printout on the whiteboard. Sorry, I’ll only have a current reading…

UPDATE: My anger alert has gone down to yellow, so I decided to move the meter further down the page for now…was an impulsive thing to start with, and taking up too much space, cluttering up the site..

RSS feeds fixed

Hey, in case you didn’t notice, and care, I fixed the RSS feeds. I only checked the RSS 2.0 feed, let me know if the RSS 1.0 or Atom feeds don’t work either. There was a slight bug in the recent security fix, I believe. All should be well now…
