Adding File Types to Windows Search

Thought this might come in handy, I’ve been searching alot for text in .php files the past few days.

Ever notice Windows Search is a little finicky? Or I should say ‘set in its ways’? It has a pre-defined list of file types it looks at when you do a search, and if your file type is not on the list, tough luck.

Luckily, this is editable via the registry. Here is a page talking about a couple of ways of adding file types. NOTE: rebooting was not necessary on my WinXP machine…

Word up!

Well, well, well, not again, you say??? Yes, I’ve changed blog software yet again! I cannot be stopped!

Actually, I’ve been looking at doing this for just a little while; dasBlog was nice, but mainly the fact that it wasn’t easily upgradeable was a major pain. For instance, remember all those posts I said I was migrating? Well, I could never figure out how to edit the XML files of dasBlog to correctly update the timestamps. Plus upgrading to a new version involved running a conversion applicaton on your log (XML) files; somewhat painful.

So here I am, now trying out WordPress…I really like it so far, the editing/admin interface is really clean, slick and fast (as well as the main site, I hope you agree). There are a ton of themes available on their wiki as well…so hopefully I’ll settle here for awhile. Sorry for any broken bookmarks, RSS links, etc. You’ll notice it’s written in PHP so there was nothing I could do!

Enjoy! I’ll be back-posting the old entries today…

Proxomitron Filters – Yahoo! Search Sponsored Results

As you pry know, these tech/geek posts will happen alot on this site; not only am I a hip 30-something year old, but also a successful computer consultant during the day…(can’t wait til the wife reads that one)…

Anyway, created a couple Proxomitron filters today to remove the sponsored results and news sections from Yahoo!’s search results page(s). They just get in the way…

Name = "Yahoo! Search News Results"
Active = TRUE
URL = "search.yahoo.com"
Limit = 2064
Match = "<div id=yschiy>*</div>"

Name = "Yahoo! Search Sponsor Results"
Active = TRUE
URL = "search.yahoo.com"
Limit = 6024
Match = "<div class=yschspns>*<div class=yschhd>*</div>*</div>"

Let me know of a better approach if you have one…

Mozilla/Firefox is hurting itself

Seems due to some bugs in its auto-update/installer programs, Mozilla is discontinuing the distribution of .zip file versions of its software. You can still get .zipped versions in the nightlies, but official releases will only be available as an installer.

OK, this is the biggest reason I haven’t converted completely to Firefox. First, they decide to switch the default theme in version 0.9 (way too close to a final release) and now this (and believe me there are alot more examples in between). For Pete’s sake! Is this a community project or not? Mozilla is slowly showing their true colors, they don’t ask for community input on much of anything (unless they need help testing THEIR code), and expect others to just cope with design decisions. And what’s really annoying is that instead of actually fixing a problem, they just do the easy thing and stop making .zip builds.

Check out some of the comments on that posting; little did they apparently plan for the fact that a number of people can’t run installer files on their PCs, due to security restrictions at work, school, etc. I’ve ranted about this ‘do first, think later’ mentality, and lack of attention to their community. I predict right now they will not reach their goals for penetration into IE’s lead, due to things like this that start annoying the pants off of hardcore or more savvy users. THESE are the people that are at the foundation of the movement. Whether it be them downloading, or influencing businesses, family members, etc. Check out the Opera forums, they are alot more caring about their users over there, and not so ‘commericial’. That’s right, commerical, Mozilla has all the qualities outside of charging for their product; they worry more about marketing and getting market share overall rather than building good community rapport and experience.

BEE-utiful

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! This just came across the wire; seems a spring training baseball game was delayed by, get this, bees! Seems the pitcher’s hair gel attracted them as they kept chasing him off the mound…

hmmm, maybe I should go check his stats and see if it was that or his pitching.

Anyone else thinking of ‘Coming to America’ right now….

Lektora 1.0 released as a free Firefox plugin..

Version 1.0 of the Lektora plugin for Firefox has been released, and contrary to their prior statements, the plugin is now free. Well, there are ads inserted into the ‘newspaper’, albeit only a couple per page on average. For a small fee, you can register the plugin and have the ads removed; very similar to Opera’s model…

FYI, I kept getting an installation warning, that said I had to have Firefox 1.0 installed for it to work; well, of course I had just upgraded to FF 1.0.2 prior to trying Lektora, so apparently there are some version detection issues. Just click OK and install, it should work fine.

‘Another’ VS2005 Delay?

I’m a little confused; according to eWeek, Microsoft is delaying the releases of Whidbey and Yukon again; they will be released simultaneously. Hmmm, I thought it was a given that Whidbey would not be out until September (in a previous post of mine). I know Yukon, last I heard, was shipping in July-ish timeframe.

Anyhow, as there are quotes from Microsoft in this article, I would take this as the latest news…ah, remember when it was supposed to ship last year? 🙂

Firefox and Thunderbird 1.0.2 Released

Mozilla has released versions 1.0.2 of Firefox and Thunderbird; mainly just some performance and security enhancements, but even with little fanfare, you should always keep up-to-date. They can both be dowloaded here.
