Rhapsody broke my scrobbler! 3 weeks later, problem solved.

For those who scrobble with Rhapsody using RhapsodyScrobbler, I’ve felt your pain.  Ever since a Rhapsody update earlier this month, Rhapsody’s Recent Tracks feed has been broken.  Meaning I’m missing 3 weeks of listening history.  And they’ve been slow as molasses in fixing it.  I’m sure it’s because they’re running it through the same rigorous testing that prevents bugs from making it to production….DOH!

Don’t worry, I still love you, Rhapsody…

Anyway, I just discovered via the Rhapsody forums that someone wrote a scrobbler plugin for Rhapsody that integrates with the Rhapsody player itself.  Works like a charm!  The only mixed blessing is it seems to send track info as a track starts playing, rather than waiting until it is completed.  Perhaps an annoyance to those who prefer to scrobble only after listening to a complete song, but I haven’t minded so far.

Enjoy!

Napster 4.0 released

Wish they could have given us some update via their messageboards, especially as we were clamoring for any hint of an update. I luckily found out from downloadsquad.

Once again the ‘check for update’ tool inside of the Napster client does not detect there is an upgrade. Goto Napster’s homepage and log in. It’ll start synching up with your music collection, to now make it available online, and then prompt you to download the new client.

Ooooo, I can’t wait to use…

Napster scrobbler

Someone in the last.fm forums has written a scrobbler for Napster…sweet!

For those uninitiated, a scrobbler is used to submit song information to last.fm, where you can view my Recently Played Tracks, my top albums, trends in listening, etc. The scrobbler is a little program that I run and sits in my taskbar, monitoring my music player (in this case, Napster), submitting the information to last.fm’s servers.

last.fm offers widgets I can embed on my site so you could see what I’m listening to, which I’m trying to do on this blog, the code is actually there, but it doesn’t show up over to the right…oh well, I’ll keep plugging away…hopefully it’s not a limitation of the fact I use wordpress.com for hosting.

In the meantime, you can check my last.fm profile page.

EDIT: turns out the code wasn’t there. Apparently WordPress.com filters out certain tags, part of the last.fm widget. No biggie, added the RSS feed there instead. Sorry, you’ll have to settle for that until WordPress.com adds the (much-requested) last.fm widget.

Worst guitar solo ever!

Check out Audioslave’s new song ‘Original Fire’.  The first AudioSlave song I’ve actually liked, it’s upbeat and rockin’.  All of a sudden the guitar solo kicks in and it’s obvious Tom Morello has no idea how to write a solo, he must be rhythm-deprived.  To be honest, I’ve never been impressed with his guitar skills outside of how he played with RATM, cuz that music fit his skills and type of playing well.  But this song’s solo is just so bad (and actually listening to some of his playing during the verses as well, that’s not the greatest match either); me and a friend were driving back from Michigan, twas the first time he’d heard the song, thought it was pretty good, then the solo kicked in. He looked at me and shook his head in agreement.

I ((heart)) 80’s Music

In an effort to resurrect my blogging efforts, I’m considering dedicating this here blog to 80s music…specifically 80s hair metal! I mean, it was the music of the late 80s, heavy makeup and mall bangs ruled the world and they weren’t just for ladies. Why the sudden interest in blogging about it? Well, like I said this blog has been sitting here in its new location doing nothing for months. Got sick of the non-stop techie chatter coming out of my mouth. Not that I still won’t from time to time (and I will still be re-uploading my old posts here in a bit, so stay tuned for that), but I need some outside focus. I’ve got my wiffleball league and buds, which have helped me see there’s more to do out there than worship Bill Gates (which I didn’t really, just a figure of speech). And hair metal is something that’s come up with a few of us (we almost went to a Cinderella/Firehouse concert this weekend), and I was quite a hair band junkie…

But while perusing the forum over at Enuff Z’nuff site (oh, yeah, I was there, a guilty pleasure, my tastes run across the board, from EZN to Megadeth/Metallica), I also ran across a mini-goldmine of links to some old 80s videos online. There’s one vid per band, and it crosses all genres of 80s music, not just hair bands. But we could care less about that ‘long-lost’ Whitney Houston video, go there to see:

Blue Murder – Jelly Roll
Britny Fox – Girlschool
Cinderella – Gypsy Road
Danger Danger – Naughty Naughty
Dangerous Toys – Scared
Def Leppard – Photograph
Europe – Final Countdown
Extreme – More than Words
Faith No More – We Care Alot
Faster Pussycat – Bathroom Wall
Guns N Roses – Welcome to the Jungle
Killer Dwarfs – We Stand Alone
Lillian Axe – Dream of a Lifetime

and more…

The day after

Thanks to all who showed up at the ‘surprise party’ last nite…and those who tried 🙂 The Wife had a little trouble with directions, but after arriving and sniffing stain for 15 minutes, bowling commenced! (Stain reference: the bowling alley apparently was remodeling their bar/lounge area, and in the midst of staining the far wall; they were using a sprayer to apply it). Needless to say there was not much ventilation (the guy doing it wasn’t even wearing a mask)..)

Which reminds me I need to just buy myself a damn ball; I know the weight I need (14 lbs), but this place had what seemed like only 13 and 15 lb balls. Either pins wouldn’t fall that should have, since the ball bounced off of them, or I couldn’t control the weight of the 15er….

But present-wise, just had to give honorable mention to The Wife’s present (one of them), ‘Essential Blue Oyster Cult’ on CD; after so many mentions of it recently, she seemed to even get more of a kick out it than me…

Not much else to report…oh, wait a minute, FYI for music fans who give a rat’s behind about the music I rave about here, I finally found out what happened to AudioVent. Not surprisingly they are no more; haven’t found out the reason why, but singer Jason (Boyd, brother of Brandon from Incubus), is in film school now and the rest of the band has reformed as Agent Sparks. Seems a little different flavor than Audiovent from what I gather, haven’t listened to their demos yet….

BTW, I can pry assume the reason for AV’s breakup was that Jason got sick of the Incubus comparisons and moved on; those comparisons were so wrong anyway, it was annoying. I know they got it alot, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case. Notice the slight ‘genre change’ to Agent Sparks.

Yahoo! Music Engine beta released

Yahoo! has finally released the beta of their new music software, Yahoo! Music Engine, supposedly their answer to iTunes and Napster. Surprisingly it looks rather nice, meaning it has a nice, clean interface (read: no ads in the interface), in fact I’m using using the software already; they offer it at $4.99/month paid 12 mos. in advance, or $6.99 monthly fee, plus you can try it for 7 days free. So it’s quite a bargain from Napster which is $14.99/month for the same features (subscription-based access to any music you want). If you have a Yahoo! online account already, it will be used by this software.

They claim over 1,000,000 songs right now, and as I’m currently a MusicMatch user, whom they bought, I notice alot of similarities. In fact I know there’s a signifcant amount of shared code. The download was rather large, around 16MB, but it doesn’t seem as bloated as MM.

Do be forewarned that the installer has a ‘RealPlayer’-like option of installing a bunch of Yahoo!’s other tools with it. But the ‘engine only’ option is a good choice, albeit it still installed Yahoo! IM, as it’s one of the key features in the Music Engine. Not a big deal to me, I shut the IM off right away and the Engine works just fine.

Music collection update

Tonight, tomorrow, what’s the difference?

OK, here is an example of the very beginnings of my ‘quest to catalog my music’. I just put in a few albums, no particular order, and voila! The software I’m using is Music Collector from Collectorz.com. It was better than some of the alternatives, none of which (that I looked at) had any capability for barcode/ASIN lookup. I mean, come on, you expect me to search by artist name? No, I want to buy a $10 wedge and hook it up to my PC to scan away! Which is what I plan to do.

Plus as you can see, I can export to different file formats such as XML, Excel and HTML. Meaning I have alot of control over the final look of my export. What you see here is the default style; there are a few templates on their website or you can easily create your own via CSS, etc.

On another music-related note (ha, pun!), last nite I was picking up The Wife’s birthday gift (which is today btw, happy birthday!), and since it was electronics-based (a new iPod Mini) I went to the ol’ standby Best Buy. Here is why I loath..er, love shopping there. The person who helped me was a 16-year kid who had a lower voice than me, which considering I give thanks for mine to 10+ years of smoking, could only imagine how much he does (or maybe he just does the Reds, as I always smoked Lights). Which is not fair of me to say, I mean some kids actually were destined to have deep voices, but this kid was small and wiry and it just didn’t jive.

Anyway, back to my point, my helper, let’s call him James Earl Jones (JEJ for short), starts chatting while entering my life’s data into his checkout terminal. I had picked up a couple CDs for myself while there, and for some reason JEJ asks if I like Beck. ‘No’, I answer, ‘weak and overrated stuff’. Then he asks about Nine Inch Nails, at which point of course yesterday’s post pops into my head, when I proclaim, ‘nah, too monotonous, but I do love Filter’. Somehow I figured this kid, who was 6 years old when Filter’s first album came out, would actually know who they were. But I also figured the NIN connection could be in effect (Robert Patrick of Filter used to be in NIN before splitting out on his own). Yet nothing, the word Filter meant nothing to him (hmm, maybe he’s a Camel guy)…

Oh well, someday there’ll be radio stations with stuff like my music on for all to truly appreciate more than the drones of today, and they’ll call it ‘the classics’ and I’ll keep rocking into my old age….

What am I listening to?

The Wife said I should post more about music. Heh, I know it thrills her when I talk like that, ‘The Wife’…mmmwahahahahahahaha….just didn’t want to reveal her identity is all 😀

Anyway, so I guess I should add one of those ‘what I’m listening to’ sections to the site. That would be kind of cool I guess; I’ve also been working on getting my CD/MP3 collection logged and put up on the site. Just been somewhat slow going on that. I’ve got an example I’ll post tonite of what I’m working with, and I’ll share what the software is that I’m using (hint: I posted about a long time ago in this blog).

So until I have the new music section up, everyone’s assignment is to go listen to some Filter. If they aren’t one of the most under-the-radar bands…well, everyone knows who they are, their hook-laden songs made some noise (‘Take a Picture’, etc.), but only the true affficianados pay attention; overall, they are one of the best bands ever. And LOUD! That’s all I’ll say for now…

Been toying with Fuel again as well. ‘Sunburn’ was an awesome album, since then they got a little sappy with songs like ‘Hemorraghe…’, etc. But even listening to their latest album, I’m starting to dig them again (all their albums).

BTW, pay attention to the PC tools section as well; it’s been updated (and is ongoing)…

BAM! Buy this band’s albums!

Oh, one other thing before I go for the day, as you’ll be seeing alot more music posts here soon…run, no, sprint to your local record store and buy any album by the band HIM…Bam Margera was frickin’ right when he said they were the best rock band…no foolin’….awesome stuff!

I highly recommend Razorblade Romance (unabashed love metal), especially for its (that’s right) awesome cover of Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’, or the newer Love Metal (a little more refined love metal)…
